If unique shaker sound is what you're after, the Spark Shaker designed by Bill Saragosa and Meinl could be just the thing. Despite its small size but comfortably rounded shape, the SH16 injects mix-cutting highs into any timbre you shake out using different playing techniques.

The Meinl Spark Shaker

By holding the shaker horizontally between your thumb and forefinger and slowly rotating the instrument, it's easy to shape a bright, sustained sound that reminds of crickets. For short and sharp staccato effects, keep the shaker vertically as you hold it between your thumb and forefinger. Or, for a wah-wah-style effect, put two shakers in the palm of your hand and curl your fingers in. Whatever technique you use, classic sound with a unique edge is a given.
